Ogg Theora, Nokia en HTML 5

Hallo,

Op 12-13 december 2007 organiseerde het W3C een workshop over "Video 
on the Web" [1]. Als voorbereiding was er een oproep voor "position 
papers" en die van Nokia [2] heeft op verschillende plaatsen de 
aandacht getrokken (b.v. [3] [4] [5]), omwille van stellingen als de volgende:
"Anything beyond that, including a W3C-lead standardization of a 
'free' codec, or the active endorsement of proprietary technology 
such as Ogg, ..., by W3C, is, in our opinion, not helpful for the 
co-existence of the two ecosystems (web and video), and therefore not 
our choice.
(...)
All these alternatives are, in our opinion, preferable over the 
recommendation of the Ogg technologies, based almost exclusively on 
the current perception of them being free."

In de WHAT WG / HTML 5 spec werden Theora en Vorbis als baseline 
codecs voor het <video> element vermeld, maar werden sindsdien verwijderd.
