RE: slightly off topic

See I have heard of those too, but we registered no Voltage surge, and
this was the only circuit affected.  These fuses both said 100A on them,
and we did have a spike due to new equipment of about 95.  It's possible
something surged up to cause the failure, IE a scheduled UPS test, and
then it increasing draw as it charged afterwards.  Still weird....

I have never heard of fuse that was anything but a fuse--a length of 
fusible metal designed to fail when certain current/time profile is 
exceeded.

I have heard of surge arrestors or absorbers, but they are always shunt 
devices design to fail to ground when a certain voltage (well above the 
operating voltage) is exceeded.
