Well, a Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) acts as a two terminal voltage
regulator by shunting current to ground when voltage exceeds the design
characteristic, but they also tend to burn out or explode when they
trigger.

An inline current regulator is very possible, but it would have to
regulate current by injecting resistance, and would generate heat.
