As for the religious issues...the answer is simple. The best OS is the one you're most comfortable and experienced with. Technically better doesn't do much good if you can't manage it as well. The hardware vs software RAID issue is tricky. Linux software RAID is very flexible, easy to manage, and well supported. The downside is, all the data has to pass over the various buses multiple times. Hardware RAID cards typically have either very wimpy processors or cost a fortune (or both), so when comparing hardware vs software RAID5, if your hw RAID card is low end, write performance will likely lag compared to software RAID5 on a system with decent idle CPU. I haven't seen a hardware RAID controller with management as straight forward as mdadm.
