RE: How do redundant power supplies in servers work?

We have noticed that the higher end APC stuff hold better, however in our datacenter we have seen HP g6/g7 servers trip going from utility to UPS before the generator kicks in.  We have larger Smart-UPS devices (10kva going to stepdown transformers) and twice now out of about 5-10 utility failures I have seen the g7's not hold even though everything else does.  We depend on our UPS power for less than 10 seconds in most cases until the generator kicks on, and we load no higher than 60%.

Very interesting article, Blake. Thanks for sending it along! We use high-end APC UPSes at my current $work, but the symptoms the author described do help make sense of some similar behavior I saw a few years ago with a cheap UPS at a client site.
