Hi.

I was not able to get to this much over the last few days but today I have
tried a few things.

One, D'Arcy, an ls or ls -ln goes by in a fraction of a second. This leads
me to believe there definately is a slow down in the lookups for some
reason, which is what I was kind of thinking before, but not sure where
to look for that.

When I change ownership of all the files in /var/mail to me or any other
valid user for example, ls -l goes by also in under a second. So if the
files are all owned by one person, its fine.

Larry: there are no NFS mounts involved in this at all. Its all local
storage on one machine.

Micheal suggested nscd, which I am looking into, but I have never had
to use it before on any of the servers I have run. I tried running it
in its completely default settings, but it did not seem to help. Looking
into it further.

But overall things seems to point to lookups for uid/gid causing the
problem.
