I was able to figure this out a few mins before I got your suggestion.

A post to freebsd-stable in 2007, a fellow had the same problem and
the fix was to do exactly what you suggest. Once I had an idea where
the slowness was coming from I was able to google-fu my way through it.

I did do a ktrace, and with nsswitch in compat and files mode.

I ctrl-c'd ktrace when it went on for more than about 5 mins and using
nsswitch with compat I got an 11G trace. When using files instead of
compat, I got a 9M trace file.
