Hi Jacot,
Looks great! I'll be at the UbuntuNet Connect Conference in Nairobi and
regret that I'll not be able to attend the function.
Kind regards
Duncan

Subject: [IOZ] 20th anniversary of the first Internet link to
sub-SaharanAfrica

Hi,

Here's the preliminary details of an event planned for the 24th November
2011
in Grahamstown at Rhodes University:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
The Function

o Lecture in Arts Major at 17h30

Programme

1 Introductions and overview by Professor Pat Terry, who will
           be the "Master of ceremonies".

2 Welcome by Dr Saleem Badat, the Rhodes Vice-Chancellor - What
the 20 years means to Rhodes.

3 Mike Lawrie - The politics: Why it happened the way it did,
           and why at Rhodes?

4 The technology - what did it take?
o	Randy Bush - behind the scenes in Portland, putting up
with people talking about "rooters" and encouraging
                 them to help themselves.
o Alan Barrett - what did it take to set up a standalone
dummy dNS for a ZA internet disconnected from the
Internet, and what issues were there round the cutover?
o Dave Wilson - The Fidonet gateway - during and after
the internet connection - why it continued running.
           o Francois Jacot-Guillarmod - The Unix/uucp environmemt
and how TCP/IP negated the idea of the gateways
required in a store and forward environment.

5 Dr Angus Hay - Keynote: Fast forward over the following 20
years from someone who was a postgrad student at the
University of the Witwatersrand at the time, to someone
who is now CTO of Neotel.

         6 Closing. Discussion/questions?
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Keep an eye on:

for updates and background information.

If you have any documents or images to share, please let me have a link,
or a copy?

Also, if there is somebody from your institution or organisation
who was involved at the time, but who has now retired or moved on,
please share this with them?

Everyone that's interested, or wants to catch up while everyone is
pretty
much in the same place, is more than welcome.

Regards,
