Hi,
Here's the preliminary details of an event planned for the 24th November 2011
in Grahamstown at Rhodes University:

The Function
o Lecture in Arts Major at 17h30
Programme
1 Introductions and overview by Professor Pat Terry, who will
be the "Master of ceremonies".
2 Welcome by Dr Saleem Badat, the Rhodes Vice-Chancellor - What
the 20 years means to Rhodes.
3 Mike Lawrie - The politics: Why it happened the way it did,
and why at Rhodes?
4 The technology - what did it take?
o Randy Bush - behind the scenes in Portland, putting up
with people talking about "rooters" and encouraging
them to help themselves.
o Alan Barrett - what did it take to set up a standalone
dummy dNS for a ZA internet disconnected from the
Internet, and what issues were there round the cutover?
o Dave Wilson - The Fidonet gateway - during and after
the internet connection - why it continued running.
o Francois Jacot-Guillarmod - The Unix/uucp environmemt
and how TCP/IP negated the idea of the gateways
required in a store and forward environment.
5 Dr Angus Hay - Keynote: Fast forward over the following 20
years from someone who was a postgrad student at the
University of the Witwatersrand at the time, to someone
who is now CTO of Neotel.
