I think simple answer would be to not rely on a company (telkom) that
focusses on shareholders return, in liea of value of services.

A half a billion in penalties has to be recouped from somewhere,
and a 12 billion impairment of it's carrying assets does not help it's
share price at all, not withstanding the fact that a over valuation
is not a very candid way to conduct business in the first place.

There also rumours of a reduction in telkom IPC fees, because of the
above, but I think most CFO's rolled there eyes and moved onto the
next article, grave yard robberies are way more interesting.

There more dstv satellite dishes in za that physical telephone lines,
think about it, oh and don't bank on ICASA doing anything.

Dina Pule has been sacked, but on her way out to the door, appointed
Rubben Mohlaloga, as a councillar to ICASA, facing fraud charges
(how does one get appointed while charged ??), leaving the next bloke
to deal with this, this while ICASA employ idiots to raid offices who
can't tell the difference between a router and a coffee machine, let
alone explore the concept of fair competition. I think now would be
the perfect time for a monopoly to fleece it's clients.

Yea I'm cynical, but I remember the same noises more than a decade
ago. If you are an ISP, and want value for your clients, sit down, dig
into the heavy technical aspects of the services that you offer, and
find the best provider for each of them, oh and use another search
engine while you do this, because google knows exactly who the
other guy is who can sell you the same crappy service but manage
to restore your faith in technology.

For example, remember you still paying over 80 cents a SMS that
costs carriers zero on the final leg because the sms's are
transmitted over the control channel, and the equivalent
message sent via whatsapp costs less than a cent in actual
bandwidth costs. The worldwide average per SMS is $0.11,
so yes, as South Africans we are being ripped off, but
it's best practise, worldwide, so an acceptable business practise
locally.

Oh and don't trust anyone who needs to employ more than two
acronyms in a single sentence to sell you stuff, it's just the
same boring two tin cups, now lead, but gold plaited and a
ten year old string, with like twenty knots in it, and what
appears to be duct tape at the end.

Now I feel so much better, can smile while I roll out a another bunch
of linux servers via high speed networks all controlled by a bunch of
scripts, modified pxe boot images and initrd's, otherwise known
as the cloud. Someone managed to take all that and roll it up into one
word, that takes genius, it's been done for more than a decade.
