Dear industry representatives,

tldr version: Please help us with a survey on DNS in Africa here:
<https://dnsafrica.study/> https://dnsafrica.study. Your responses will not
be personally identified and a comprehensive report will be made freely
available. Thank you.

ICANN has seen fit to commission a baseline study on the DNS market in
Africa. As this hasn't been done before, statistics are distinctly lacking.
We have built an online survey tool, that offers six questionnaires in four
languages - English, French, Arabic and Portuguese.

Briefly, we want to quantify the domain name market in all African
countries, determine the numbers of ccTLD domains registered inside or
outside Africa, as well as gTLDs and Premium names. We will also analyse the
responses and make findings on what seems to work in expanding domain names
and what doesn't.

The questionnaires are aimed at:-

*         Registries

*         Registrars

*         Registrants & Academics

*         Regulators & Governments

*         Domain Name Resellers

*         IXP Managers

I would be highly appreciative if all the members of this list who fit into
any of these categories were to sign on at

 <https://dnsafrica.study/> https://dnsafrica.study

and to complete as many questionnaires as are relevant to your situation.
Each questionnaire only takes a few minutes, and all responses will be kept
confidential. You are able to suspend a questionnaire and come back later,
or ask a colleague to complete part of it. For this reason I don't suggest
using a valuable password. In addition, if the questionnaires are completed
annually, we will get a good idea of trends.

Note that Registry operators and Regulators / Governments need to be
specifically authorised by a team member, and that if, for example, you
manage more than one IXP or more than one Registry, we'd appreciate it if
you could complete a questionnaire for each instance.

Aggregated statistics and a comprehensive report will be published in due
course.

In addition, we have developed software to analyse zone files and derive
some valuable statistics as a result. We have an equivalent SQL query tool.
No WHOIS lookups are required. We will share these with all cooperating
Registries, Registrars and Resellers. For this purpose, we are only looking
for three data: Domain name; date registered; country of registrant.

Your cooperation in helping us with the questionnaires, and where relevant,
domain data as above, is highly appreciated. Please pass this message on to
those who you deem relevant.

Kind regards,

William Stucke
