We are doing this to take advantage of = what a session at NANOG a year ago identified as an 'emerging opportunity' = =AF to become a 'transit exchange' in addition to a peering exchange. ISPs = and large transit customers are looking for less expensive and robust ways = to get transit. By expanding our operation to more than one location and = interconnecting via GigE over dark fiber we can offer distributed exchange = that is highly reliable (dual switches in multiple locations) and allows = transit customers to access high quality transit from more than one = supplier without having to pay for a local loop for each feed. Since the = exchange nodes are in data centers, they can also access the capabilities = of the data centers with the same local loops. Third, the reason we started the exchange was to improve local Internet = performance. Given that the majors are supplying a lot of the local = connections, and that we want Oregonians to be able to have successful = Internet businesses this means we really need to eventually be "on the = backbone" or as close as we can get. Currently, those Oregon companies = that want a serious Internet presence commonly move their web site out of = state in order to get close to the backbone and improve performance.
