Certainly yes you can.

I have  no access to my  machine which runs dataone  right now; please
wait for 36 hours. I will post a mini howto on this list.

Nah. You need to enable eth0, but  all I remember right now is you put
in only one line.

Yup. That  is another way of  using this contraption. I  do not prefer
that for security reasons. Nothing beats security provided by good ol'
gnu/linux.  This  way, the router  is 192.168.1.1 and  your standalone
machine could be

(a) a dhcp client (put auto eth0 dhcp in /etc/network/interfaces)
(b) a  client with a  fixed local IP  address like 192.168.1.X  wher X
could be any number except 1.

Both require configuration on the modem/router.

Depending on your perspecrive, this set  up can be both a boon as well
as a blessing - you cannot ssh into your box (the public IP belongs to
the modem/router); but you can  do some NAT / portforwarding tricks on
the router  to forward ssh  traffic to the  PC.  Of course,  not being
able to ssh into your box would be considered a boon by several ...

I do  not know what is running  NAT / firewalling bla..  bla.. on this
modem / router, so I decided to use it as a pppoe modem.
