Please try using an earlier version of (3.2) knoppix. :)
This look like a chipset problem; and not a problem with the distro.

ATI has some of the worst support for free software when it comes to
providing drivers.
What is the output of lspci when you boot from the install disk? (try
ctrl + alt + F2, and hit enter). Look for lines containing the words
SATA and/or RAID. This should give info about the exact chipset used.
Please get back to the list.
If the chipset is actually supported in la later kernel version, you
can get a new installer from
http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/daily/amd64/ and install
the current testing.

Free Software is a misnomer.
You should say `Liberated User'.
