Not sure about AMD, but, I installed Debian Sarge 3.1r0a GNU/Linux on HP 5500 Intel 2.8 GHz with 80 GB Sata HDD. I had to boot from the first installation CD with the 2.6.8 kernel by passing "linux26" at the boot prompt. By default it boots the 2.4 kernel, which, I believe does not include the SATA drivers.
