Try dmesg instead of lspci. 

Also, are you qsure that this is a SATA problem and not chipset detection
issue? Have you tried an ordinary EIDE Harddisk?

The kernel has  excellnt support for sata; I  am myself running Debian
(only main) on pure AMD64, Sarge, on  MSI Neo M/B with VIA chipset - I
expressly forbade  my vendor from using  any other chipset  due to the
h/w issues;  and also took a knoppix  CD along with me  to test before
taking delivery.
