Githin,have a look at gaim's main window>tools
menu>preferences>Sounds.enable options sounds when conversation
hasfocus.And put Sound Method as Automaticif that also fails "apt-get
remove --purge gaim "and reinstall will help.b/w i am running ubuntu
breezyand sarge and no sound or GFX problems as Yet..Best of
LUX..Happy
NewYear...
