gdm and security stuff

hello all,

i have been using gdm as the display manager and was using kernel
2.6.15.1. i have now upgraded it to 2.6.15.3 and now gdm is not
getting up. it is also showing some security issues while trying
apt-get using root.just see below...[iam running it from root]

friend:~# apt-get upgrade
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission
denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you
root?
