The resolution is possible only if the driver supports
it. What is your hardware? Which graphics card?

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1, which will give you the console,
login as root.

1. Find out if you are using XFree86 or Xorg from the
output of:

 X -version

2a. To reconfigure your X settings you can use
(respectively):

 dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

 dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org

Or

2b. You can also manually edit your
/etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and add
the new mode in the "Section Screen" and under "Modes"
of your file.

3. Restart X:

 init 3
 init 5

Let us know if you need any help,

SK
