gif is patented.  http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html You can read this
why we should not use gifs.

b) odt  seems to be desired because it is of  the FOSS type s/w, vs. say

pdf is desired since there are many Free Software  pdf viewers (but not one
for Windows in my knowledge though)

 Linux's OpenOffice suite etc. operate

Anyway odt is prefered as it is an open standard, not just OpenOffice many
other programes support open document format like Abiword,  Koffice
