I think that's a misconception.  It is not the look and feel that
prevent users to adapt GNU/Linux but the resistance/fear to go for a
different system or the difficulty to unlearn something. There are
several desktops available for GNU/Linux and many of them looks and
feel better than XP. So our strategy should be to make new users feel
that GNU/Linux is something different to the proprietary system they
are familiar with, but it is not very difficult to migrate to this
system.

The users will use any GNU/Linux as long as it meets the users purpose. Recently I had a project of converting my companies Admin and HR dept personnel's PC's into GNU Linux. I had to struggle with my topmgmt to reach to this decision :). So one weekend I asked the IT Dept to replace all their OS with Kubuntu. The following monday we gave a study class of differences between the C: D: funda and told them to use their home directory instead for saving all their files. Well there were all types of queries for the first one week. But now all of them are happy users working with Firefox,Thunderbird, GAIM,Open Office,XMMS and Skype. I should say the project was 95% successful. There were two machines running Tally which I could not change because they had huge amount of accounts in it. Now the IT Dept has reduced head ache of Virus and system crashes from these Dept's.
