While everyone's discussing PRISM, what came out of The Guardian's report yesterday is that UK's GCHQ has been directly tapping into fibre-optic cables to monitor Internet/phone traffic for the past 18 months. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/jun/21/gchq-cables-secret-world-communications-nsa To quote: "The documents reveal that by last year GCHQ was handling 600m "telephone events" each day, had tapped more than 200 fibre-optic cables and was able to process data from at least 46 of them at a time." ... "This was done under secret agreements with commercial companies, described in one document as "intercept partners"."
