The point makes sense (for giving people an opportunity to check who they want to send the reply to). My query arose out of curiosity, now satiated. The Reply v/s Reply-All becomes a matter of personal preference with webmail apps (GMail, for example) allowing users to set default reply behavior to Reply-All. People who are comfortable with notion of always replying to the list can set this setting to Reply-All in their clients.
