Yes, well, I am sure we will all be comforted to know that our fraudulent netas are capable of more canny political nuance.

What worries me much more is the hubris of thinking that the EVM and its appurtenances, the whole ecosystem of storage, setting, safeguarding etc are inviolable. 

The same mindset characterises the UID system visioneered by Nilekani. His vision, my nightmare. Both dreams, till the coriander goes to the booth (or better still, stands for election -- worse, if the coriander also sneaks a peek at our bank accounts, or 'identifies' us present at a crime scene, while the real coriander laughs all the way to the bank).  

An aside for anyone interested in the intersection between science, technology and society: the much-mocked Ludd (not very well documented in history, but definitely in folklore) is today considered a byword for anti-technology (read 'anti-progress', or, 'anti-development'), but the truth is that the movement called Luddism was an attempt to ameliorate the unthinkably cruel and barbaric environment of the early industrial age, where children were condemned to a lifetime (a brief lifetime) of horrendous working conditions, at subsistence wages, or just plain slavery. With Nilekanis around, we need Ludds.

As far as EVMs go, simply looking at how ridiculously difficult it is to compromise them (which is the sum total of Prof Indiresan's assessment, and Indy was an outstanding teacher and scientist in other respects) is being hopelessly idealistic. Most of those difficulties fade away, given the right application of grease.
