Not quite sure if the difference as 'profound', but when I use my
mobile-phone camping on a 4G cell tethered to my PC, many of the
applications on my PC behave as if I were connected to my ADSL at home. The
list of applications includes 'Microsoft Skype for Business', 'PC Backup'
software, 'Outlook' etc. OTOH, when same phone is camping on 3G cell, the
quality is what I've come to expect as fast in spurts/bursts followed by
periods of comatose connectivity. When camping on 2G (EDGE), in most
cases... data services are next to unusable. In case of LTE, the
connectivity behaviour s lot more homogeneous i.e. extended phases of very
good speeds, some periods of acceptable but lower speeds...not the burst,
coma, burst cycles. For me, not having 4G signal (and ADSL down) means not
being able to telecommute. The 3G service, doesn't cut, most of the time.
However, the variation in 3G QoS is significant from area-to-area, with 4G,
it appears to be lot more consistent.
