Hi,

I have a few quick notes to comminucate to you today.

 * The results of our Survey are in.  You can find the results and
   commentary  at http://www.aclug.org/news/938489010/index_html
   which is part of our news site at http://www.aclug.org/news/.
   Interesting stuff.  You're welcome to post to that address!

 * Clint has posted some information to the news site about updating
   your Debian distribution.  He's promised to get a reformatted
   version up soon as well.

 * The committee is planning future meetings.  The dates are October
   11 and 25.  Topics are being discussed and the survey results are
   helpful here.  Any other comments are welcome too.  There is also
   talk about setting up workshops since there seems to be significant
   interest there.  Keep comments coming!

 * There is interest in Wichita in non-Linux Free Unix OSs.  You are
   welcome to discuss questions relating to these OSs such as FreeBSD,
   Hurd, etc. in our lists, on our website, at meetings, etc.

 * Reminder: you can sometimes find ACLUG people online in IRC for
   live chat.  Use server irc.us.openprojects.net, channel #aclug.

ACLUG MEETING: MONDAY OCTOBER 11
----------------------------------

Tonight's meeting hopes to de-mystify the process of compiling a custom
Linux kernel. 
  
Why might I want to do so you ask?
   
 * To add support for hardware that isn't supported by default
      Like sound cards, TV Cards, Firewire
 * To lower your memory requirements by removing the code for hardware
      your system doesn't support.

How hard is it?
  
 Not hard once you understand the process. We will be presenting a live
demonstration of the process with a discussion of the various options that
you will encounter.  

The speaker for this topic is our very own Clint (Cheez) Brubakken.
 

P.S. Anyone who wishes to exchange PGP public keys should bring their key
on a DOS formatted disk. We will be offering to sign keys at the end of
the meeting.

OTHER BUSINESS
--------------

At our last Linux installation day, many people inquired about setting up
their network.  As our space was limited that day, it was decided that
ACLUG would offer a half-day workshop on networking at a later date.  We
have now tentatively scheduled the workshop for Oct 30 from Noon till 6PM.
An announcement with details and directions for signing up will be
forthcoming.   


 MEETING SCHEDULE

Pursuant to decisions made on August 16, 1999, ACLUG meetings will be 
scheduled as follows:

 * Every other Monday Beginning August 30, at 7:00/7:30 PM

Meetings will be held in 260 Jabara Hall on the campus of Wichita State
University as always.  Details on the event schedule and upcoming events can

MEETING FORMAT REMINDER
-----------------------

One issue that has been somewhat troublesome is making presentations
interesting and useful for people with a wide range of Linux experiences. 
We want our meetings to be useful for as many people as possible, so our
plan is this: For those of you that are starting out with Linux, or just
interested in what Linux can do, please feel free to join us at 7:00 PM on
each meeting date (every other Monday starting August 30th).  We'll cover
some basics about the evening's topic or Linux in general, or  have an
informal Q&A time, depending on what the people present prefer. Also, 
if you have any Linux questions (beginning or advanced), we'd like to get to
them between 7 and 7:30 so that the evening doesn't get too late for those
that have to work or go to class in the morning.

Our regular presentation will begin at 7:30 as it always has.  Of course, if
you can make it at 7, you're encouraged to stay for the whole program.  You
are welcome to arrive at either 7 or 7:30.


LOCATION AND MAPS

 We will hold the this event in the Computer Science Department in
Jabara Hall on the main east campus of Wichita State University.
ACLUG has assembled some driving instructions on the Web at
http://www.aclug.org/maps/.  We will be located on the second floor of
Jabara Hall.  We expect to be in room 260, but we'll be sure to post
signs if we need to relocate elsewhere.  You'll be able to find a sign
on the wall in front of the 2nd floor elevator when you arrive.

Room 260 is almost directly in front of you as you exit the second-floor
elevator.

ACLUG was created in early 1998 as a group to help people discover
better ways to take advantage of modern computing through the use of
