Pre-meeting, 11:30am - 12:00 Noon, to discuss configuration of a network
card in Linux

   This workshop is intended primarily for people with very little
experience networking Linux.  We will begin by discussing basic networking
concepts, and how the Internet works, then will move on to configuring your
very own Internet server for use at home or at the office.  We will
configure your machine as a web server and FTP server, as well as help you
log in to your machine remotely using telnet or ssh.  You will have the
opportunity to configure your computer as a gateway to the Internet for a
small or private LAN, as well as set up a mail server for other machines on
your network.

   It is assumed that you already have an Internet connection of some sort
from your ISP or place of work or school, whether it be a dialup modem
connecting using PPP, cablemodem, or a direct ethernet connection to your
work LAN.

   We will have a small LAN set up at the workshop, and you are welcome to
bring your own computer to the workshop to configure it there.  Other
highly-trained (but not necessarily in the area of computer networking),
unprofessional Linux experts will be on sight to help you as you have
questions.  If you intend to bring your computer to the workshop, be sure to

   Below is a tentative schedule for the afternoon.  Each topic will be
covered for approximately 30 minutes, beginning with the very basics and
getting more advanced as time allows.  There will be a 15-minute time period
after each presentation to ask questions on that specific topic, with a
general question/answer time after the workshop.  There will be a 30-minute
break at 4:00 for people to grab some quick food or drink (NOTE: Please do
not bring food or drink into the lab!).  We will be adjourned at 6:00, but
you are free to stay as late as 7:00pm to ask general questions.

   Workshop notes will be made available online at least two days prior to
the workshop.  You may print these out and bring them with you to the
workshop.  Optionally, you may also purchase a printed and bound copies of
the notes for $3/each.

   If you plan to come, either with a computer, or just to listen, be sure
to register!  Space is limited!  If you cannot make it for the entire
workshop, please mention in the comments section of the registration form
what time(s) you will be there.

   If you are bringing your computer, be sure to bring:  Your computer,
monitor, keyboard, mouse, Linux CD-ROM (whichever CD-ROM you installed Linux
from), network card (if you have one), and a 6' ethernet cable to match your
network card.  We will have both 10base2 (coax) and 10/100baseT (twisted
pair) ethernet connectivity.  We also plan to have one or two null-modem
connections available, in case you're trying to set up a stand-alone server,
that isn't connected to an ethernet network.
