I saw this study popup yesterday as well. Had a couple of thoughts on it. 1. I’ve spent a good bit of time on stack overflow (who hasn’t?) and I’ve noticed that the best way to get a high SO score is to answer quick broad questions. Seems I always get more points for this than for an obscure and detailed answer. Meaning presence on SO may be more important than depth of knowledge. This study kind of just shows that older programmers have higher SO scores. Agree with the article but the statistical analysis is bad. 2. I’ve always thought this was kind of a cop out reason to fire people. Most programmers who are good invest in new techs simply because they enjoy it. I’ve always felt it was really more of an excuse to fire the guy that makes 100k+ and replace him with a new grad at 50K, “We need some new blood, the old programmers don’t want to learn X”. Does the code suffer from this attitude? Of course, but for that MBA who just trying to cut overhead and get himself a raise it’s a win-win. It reminds me of shopping at Walmart. Why get quality when you can get stuff so cheap that its almost disposable? Overall, older devs (37 and up) had better reputations (meaning they provided more helpful information) than younger developers.
