The part of your mail that I quoted there (purposely out of context) is
definitely not perception; it's very real (and quite scary for us older
guys).  Now, whether that's rational or if the lure of "more current
skills" pans out is another discussion altogether.  That study seems to
indicate it may not be.  And, context is important; startups vs.
established companies may each want and need different types of people than
the other, too.

On the positive side, I have noticed in meetups and conferences that a lot
of the clientele is aging with me; not *ALL* of my contemporaries have gone
into management; some of us still like actually producing something of
value ;-)
