Eric Schaffer's Institutionalization of Usability begins with premise #1--The need for an executive champion. Without an executive champion, all other efforts in usability are fruitless. Programmers and designers will simply crank out their work without any feedback loops whatsoever, and they will always say that they are right, and that any users who do not comprehend The-Great-Them are stupid. Important to remember: Usability is research. "If we knew what we were doing, it would not be called research." (Einstein) Corporate CEOs are either scientific, or political; if they are of the political type, I would recommend either finding a different job--or doing what they say--and forever biting your tongue--like the rest of Corporate America.
