Exertion interfaces are computer interfaces that require intense physical
effort from their users. Recently, emerging sport systems such as Nike+ and
games consoles such as the Wii began to demonstrate the potential of this
merging of exertion and technology.



Exertion is attributed with physical health  in particular weight loss,
addressing the obesity epidemic -, and also social benefits; however, there
is still only little understanding how design can facilitate these benefits.



In order to investigate this, Floyds team has developed and studied
Jogging over a Distance, a novel system that allows 2 jogging partners,
one in Europe, one in Australia, to run together, using spatialized sound
delivered over headphones: if one person runs faster, the audio for the
other person appears to come from the front, if slowing down, the audio
appears to come from behind.



This talk is an introduction to Floyds Exertion Interfaces work, while also
a preview of his talk at Siggraph in LA next week.



*Bio: *

Florian Floyd Mueller is a Visiting Scholar on a Fulbright Fellowship at
CS and CDR in Stanford for one year. Originally from Germany, his research
has spanned affective computing, tangible interfaces and CSCW conducted at
Xerox Parc, FXPalo Alto Laboratories, MIT Media Lab and Media Lab Europe.
Before joining the Interaction Design Group at the University of Melbourne,
Australia, Floyd was a principal scientist at the Commonwealth and
Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia (similar to
NSF), leading a research team of 12 staff on the future of Connecting
People.
