Simply Mepis?

That's what they call it, but I've never seen any Linux distro act like
this one.
The first time I tried installing this after installing Debian on the first
try, took 5 attempts and eventually ended up shorting out the motherboard,
an Intel DG35EC.
Maybe it was because the motherboard was old?
So I swapped out the motherboard and tried again installing Debian first,
but the only choice the boot menu offered was Mepis.
Knoppix, Mint, Debian, and Ubuntu will share the same hd or PC without a
problem. Not Mepis.
This is part of a college course to teach people something about the suite
of openoffice programs.
The choices seem to be running it on the old Dell(if it destroys it, then I
haven't lost much).
Mint 12 has virtual box, so that might be an alternative.
I have never seen any Linux distro act like this.
The fiasco with Centos could be attributed to my ineptness with the ATI
4650 graphics card, but it did not destroy my hardware.
I am trying to find a way to safely run Mepis, if there is one.
Any suggestions?
It just never occurred to me that a college course would require you to run
malicious software.
If you feel brave enough to play with this thing(?), go for it.
