Thank you to those who've replied with advice.

Having done some research on Knoppix, this seems a very sensible option for
familiarizing myself with Linux and seeing whether I have any unusual
hardware. I shall follow the 'best distro for noobies' thread with interest
too.

Fred, the motive for TurboLinux was that Acer claimed to offer it as a
standard option (including warranty support). Since they didn't deliver, I'd
rather go for something more well-known.
