Eric, I use RH, but for newbie distribution I think that Knoppix is the way to go. It can be installed on any computer without anxiety. Assuming that it is not compatible - video or sound problems for example, it can be uninstalled without trace. Although I have not tried it, I understand a permanent installation can be done from the Knoppix disk.
