Subject: RE: [blug-tech] WEP problem on Mandrake - the install story

hehe.. well the story is good and bad as most of my Linux install -
especially the one for desktop.

I install 9.1 initially and since I had problem configuring the wireless
card I thought let's try and see how 10.0 will do. So here it goes (might
help some):
Hardware:
Dell Latitude CPx (old one without internal LAN and modem) Pentium 500Mhz I
think SMC2632W PCMCIA wireless card.
*side notes: My WAP is as well a SMC - also got a router but never managed
to make it working in China and a friend is having same problem with his
Linksys. In US both work very well - same hardware, they just don't like
traveling I guess.

So I installed the 3 CDs, didn't configure the network but it got
automatically detected at boot up after install finished and basically all
was running fine (sound and so on).
* another side notes: always had problems with configuring the right screen
size on X since I can remember. Some distro automatically understand you
want more lines on the same screen (like using 1400x1050 on my screen
instead of 1024x768 and scrolling all the way to reach both side of the
screen!!!). So Mandrake 9.1 was doing that fine, 10.0 seems not to be
willing to understand me. I guess I will need to look into x config file
later to have the desired effect.

So the SMC card was recognized but never managed to get it working with
WEP... then disabled WEP but card somehow stopped to be found, try a few
other things, got fed up, reinstalled and all was working. I guess I
probably should have played with the command line a bit more but was not in
the mood (got other things to do that learning how Mandrake 10.0 manages
network cards and interfaces right now).

So now everything is working well, fully recognized but my network is just
plain open... so you can come in my street, browse the web at 512Kbps and
even take a look at my files on my unsecured Windows station on that same
network. If you do, please give me some comments on the latest pix I took...
thanks!

So I was planning on using Mandrake Control Center to enable WEP but the
'encryption key' field does not force any format. On my Wireless Access
Point I can either enter a passphrase or an hexadecimal key (* I use hexa),
and my mandrake box I just won't succeed using this same exact key.

So now, is that better?

Thanks if you can help.

Fred

And you are thinking to just to say :'I'm using Mandrake 10 on my
wireless LAN" without give more info on this!!!!!! :-)
Come on, tell us the full story... wich card are u using? it was
automatically configured or you did some hack to make it working? I
think a lot of Penguins are interested in this, even if WEP is
disabled.
Ciao
