Since i successfully did the pppoeconfig & plog, it sounds like the error=
 message i'm getting is from the provider, not my configuration, so i'll =
follow it up with them.

I sure appreciate the quick replies, as always this is why i like trying =
to see the world thru the Linux lenses -- because of the companionship.

I believe my provider is Wangtong, and on Debian I just run pppoeconf to =
connect. It tests for a pppoe service on all available network connection=
s, and if it finds one prompts me for a userid and password, then connect=
s. Very straight-forward to use, and has always worked for me on two diff=
erent ADSL accounts. Except one time when a bill was overdue, and then I =
got a login error in plog until the bill was fixed..... Clayton
