I have to agree with Benjamin: when it comes to IDEs there are not many
alternatives besides Eclipse and KDevelop. I personally favor Eclipse,
because some components of KDevelop were (probably still are) broken in
Debian Sarge.

Sounds interessting, might give it a try some day. I also don't like the
managed projects in eclipse much. Fortunately you can also have
"unmanaged projects" where you write your makefiles yourself.

I used to use vi a lot and still use vim on a daily basis for text
editing. (Sometimes vi is the only reasonable editor you get.) But for
developping C and C++ codes I stick with eclipse now: you may easily get
gdb-support and syntax-highlighting anywhere else, but the
subversion/CVS-integration is just great and saves me a lot of time.

Think so too. But probably have to check how well it's supported by your
distribution. KUbuntu might be good and afaik Gentoo's versions of
KDevelop are fine, too. Debian Etch might have improved the situation.
