So... I guess I am a Gentoo user.

What does that mean? It means I setup a Gentoo box, and still use it.
What doesn't that mean? That I only use Gentoo.

A distro is a personal choice that does provides a different user
experience based on the tools that distro provides. It does not mean
that you can not have a slackware system work like a debian system, or
a redhat system work like an ubuntu system. It means you learn about
the system in a little different fashion than another person and have
different ways to maintain the packages on that system.

I would suggest trying gentoo, and if you aren't happy learning their
install path... LFS. It is important to learn how the system works
and not just how to utilize the GUI.

If you only use linux with X and a bloated windowing
system(gnome/kde), you aren't being much different than a Windows or
Mac user, nor are you learning much about Linux.

Remember, Linux is a kernel. There are tools in the user space around
that kernel that provide a GUI and other applications.
