I think I heard about this months ago, probably through another
channel so I don't know what email you're talking about (I don't
use students.depaul.edu).

I'm not one of the sys admins and I'm pretty sure they don't frequent
this list. Its just part of a larger trend. If I may rant a bit...

Universities everywhere giving Google and Microsoft the job of
running the University email systems. Personally I loath it and
when it was forced upon me at another institution the only real
option was to simply refuse to Google's terms not use the account.

Indiana University is one of the few that gives you a choice of Google
or Microsoft or your own. I wish more schools would do this, lobby for
it if its important to you. I don't know how they are doing delivery or
forwarding, but that is something to consider too.

For instance, do this on your Linux box:

  dig mx depaul.edu

Notice that *all* @depaul.edu addressed email now essentially goes to
Google first. Even if you setup forwarding, Google is going to at
least get a first glimpse. I don't believe Google is taking unfair
advantage of their role here, but I don't personally trust this sort
arrangement.

Was I still doing netops at DePaul, I most likely would have freaked
out and made a big fuss when that change was contemplated or first
made. All email for security@, networks@ not to mention all the hr,
legal, admin, faculty emails going first to to a third party by default
just seems like an obviously bad idea to me. But apparently I may be
the only one to think so, because I've rarely seen anyone anywhere
care about this sort of thing. *shrug*
