BTW, dd is primarily for getting an exact copy of a functioning drive and is probably not the tool to use when transferring data from a failing drive, particularly a large one, using the /dev addressing. ddrescue is better at handling the failing part but if you use the /dev addressing it will also try and copy the unused space. Chances are then that it will try and try and try and will eventually copy the unused space that you didn't care about anyway. Trying to do a bitwise copy of 1TB will take a long time under the best of circumstances.
