In my experience, the best and most reliable thing to do to a failing
drive is to run ddrescue right now, extract everything you can, and then
do recovery on the image you've created.

Having to have the heads go back and forth seeking all over the disk is
a recipe for things going slow and wrong.

I had a friend's HD that would barely mount, but when I just grabbed the
image, there were only two read errors on the whole thing and all the
data came back fine when I loopback mounted the image.
