I was talking to my brother at Christmas and he was tweaking me about Linux and how it wasn't going anywhere. He happened to be speaking to me on an Android phone and was a little surprised at my tweaking him back for his unintended irony as he was talking to me via a Linux based device. Since then I've been thinking of making a quick 'identifying Linux devices around the home' email for the family. For example, for home routers it would be something like "If it doesn't have CISCO on it, it will be running Linux". (Is that still true by the way? Does anyone have counter-examples to that or any numbers on what percentage of home routers are Linux based etc.?) With maybe an additional note about the "cousins" of Linux (I thought the easiest way of explaining them was 'functionally equivalent but with different licences about sharing the source code') and how they fit into things eg. Mac OS X being made from parts of OpenBSD and FreeBSD etc. If I'm going to do this it probably makes sense to ask you guys for help compiling my list :-) Anyone got a few sentences to quickly identify a whole range of devices and/or links to surveys with numbers of devices running embedded Linux systems? -- "Believing men would act in their own interest was not cynicism, it turned out, but sheerest optimism; in reality men do not meet so high a standard." -- Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (Chapter 84) http://hpmor.com/ Reece Arnott Dunedin New Zealand _______________________________________________ DunLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.ethernal.org/listinfo/dunlug DunLUG Wiki - http://dunlug.kallisti.net.nz/
