Recovery of Linux after a problem windows 8 install

Matt Dwyer asked me to post to the list to ask if anyone has experience
with problems after installing Windows 8.

Briefly, he installed windows 8, which went OK, but after re-running
grub so he could access both linux and windows, he lost his /home
partition (it wasn't really lost, but the partition table entry wasn't
right so it wouldn't mount.

After some work with a partition tool, he has recovered /home, but his
windows 8 partition and linux root partition are now somehow merged into
one - although he can still see the files on them if he boots into his
disk/partition tool.

Needless to say he has bought second drive and is dd-ing the disk on to it.

However, he asks: does anyone have any experience with recovering disks
after a disaster windows install?

Cheers,
Alex
