Constant up dates, repeated reboots

I am getting irritated by the constant updates in ubuntu.
What is really inconvenient is about once a week I get instructed to reboot.
What is going on? I am getting to the point where I am ignoring them,
because there are so many. Which means that security is not enhanced
but is in fact compromised.
It seems to me that there is "boy cries wolf" problem here, where very
minor issues are put into the same channel as important issues.
