If you're running an LTS (like trusty, or precise before it), then I
believe (I'd need to look this up to be 100% sure) that we only do
non-security updates into the 'backports' repository. Generally speaking,
it's reasonably difficult to release a package to an LTS after it's been
released, so there's usually a good reason for it - either it's something
that a lot of people are asking for, or it's a security update, or perhaps
a bugfix release to solve problems people have raised since the LTS
release. None of that helps you, f course.

One thing you might try is to set up a cron job to automatically download
(and perhaps automatically install) security updates, so the notifications
don't bother you. In some cases (kernel drivers, init scripts, system
daemons) you'll still need to reboot in order to get the added security,
but it might reduce the annoyance in the meantime.
