Thank you every body.  This has been really helpful.

If I make any progress I will let you know.

FYI I am on a school board and we have been using Google Drive to share
and collaboratively edit documents.  These are intelligent but non
technical people (mostly , hi Tom!).

I hate Google.  Every interaction I have with their servers makes me
hate them more - as they try harder and harder to get some thing from me
they can profit from.

But to make us move away I need an alternative.

So thank you for the pointers, I will explore some more
