512mb sticks of laptop DDR ram cost about $35+shipping new. Doubt they
will be much cheaper second hand.

Certainly something with RAM, but it is usually cheaper to upgrade
this yourself than buy something new with oodles of ram. 2gb minimum
if it's vista, 4gb advisable. As for graphics, most lower end laptops
appear to have intel graphics, but some of the slightly more fancy
ones have fairly decent ATI or nVidia chipsets. They are comparable to
desktop graphics cards, with the only caveat that it is not generally
possible to upgrade them. Unless she is doing some heavy 3D stuff,
anything will cut the mustard if it's a new laptop.
