microphone/phone for VOIP

Hi everyone

I've installed Skype and bought a headset which I can get going in 
WinXP, but the mic is so quiet I can hardly be heard.  Unfortunately it 
doesn't work at all on Linux (Pclinuxos) which is my every day computing.

I've been looking at microphones on line, and also seen phones for VOIP, 
and would appreciate opinions/ideas from people who have experience with 
this ie pros and cons.
