The telecom modems are for 3G (HSDPA/UMTS via the cellphone network)
rather than for wifi. The laptop must have had built in wifi if it
could pick up your network. The certificate error may be because the
laptop is configured to connect to a corporate wifi network. Would be
interested to know if it worked on other wifi networks.
