Interesting observations.
Bought a Vodem USB stick the other day for use with my laptop.
Lappy is a dual boot of Ubuntu 10.10 and WinXPH

First surprise was the signal (3G) is reported as 'poor' right here in 
Hastings city suburbia.
No idea how good/bad its gonna be anywhere rural.........

So I thought some speedtests might be in order.

 From Linux - 0.77Mbps down and 0.11Mbps up.
 From WinXP - 0.19Mbps down 0.12Mbps up.

Mobile Broadband? .. hardly..

No idea why linux is so much faster down, but happy that it is :)
